Brand New - You Won’t Know

I’m not going to listen to this right now, because when I listen to this album, I get more aggressive than I should be on a Monday. Someone might get hurt. But you should listen to it. So so so so good.

Watched “Pirate Radio” last night. It was a joy. A little too much with the plot and adventure there in the end, but so much Roy and so much gorgeous music. Five stars. This morning I listened to Leonard Cohen’s “So Long, Marianne,”- which is featured in the movie - about 40 times. Now you listen - as many times as you like.

Joel Plaskett, “Make a Little Noise”

I’m going out tonight/ To make some enemies.

(OK, not really. I wish. “I’m going home tonight/ To put my laundry together,” more likely)

Joel Plaskett, “Soundtrack of the Night,” Ashtray Rock

I laid some Plaskett on a dude at work this week. He was asking for it. When I was showing off my credit in the Thrush Hermit box set (yeah, I’m like that), we ended up looking up ThrushHermit.com, which redirects to Wikipedia, which specifies the band members. “Joel Plaskett?” he asked. “Like ‘Television Set’ Joel Plaskett?” I called his bluff, he pulled out his iPod, and there it was. Guy’s a big Duchovny fan (almost creepily so) so I should have guessed he’d seen his share of “TV Set,” which features the song. Still, an unexpected delight. And my opportunity to force him to listen to way more Joel.

Anyway, because I pulled some songs for him to sample, I’ve been Joel-ing it up at work. I keep coming back to this song, and in particular, the line: “Don’t resist it, you said, we’re getting older.” No kidding. I mean, it’s the spectacular delivery as much as the sentiment, but true true true.

Still getting that tattoo, though. To mark 34.5. Call it a midlife crisis - though it would suck to not make it to 70.

Joel Plaskett, “All the Way Down the Line,” Three

Man, I already miss Thrush Hermit. Too much. So I’m taking a break, though the break does include Joel Plaskett - Emergency and solo - Camouflage Nights, Drug Dog, etc. (I can’t go cold turkey!)

Which brings us to Joel’s “All the Way Down the Line,” my new wedding song. Sigh.

This morning, I missed my stop on the train. Could be that I’m just not used to how short the commute has become. More likely, it’s that I got too caught up in what I was listening to.

The first time I remember this happening, I was on the M5 bus, and it was my introduction to Oasis’ “Supersonic.” I lived on 102nd and Riverside, but didn’t shake myself out of the “Supersonic” fog until somewhere around 116th St.

This time, I’d like to say I was so caught up in “I Go to the Barn Because I Like The,” from Band of Horses, a song I’ve been revisiting after it was featured on “Psych.” I did listen to that twice this morning, and it’s gorgeous. I can’t upload it for you here, but you can have a listen via that video up there, if you’re so inclined.

But no, that’s not what was playing when I spaced out and missed 34th St. It was “Talk Dirty to Me” by Poison.
