turned out i’d been following him and he’d been following me
Still crazy about this song. Laura Marling’s voice is fascinating to me, plus the song itself is so insightful, but in a gentle, wistful sort of way that doesn’t hurt my feelings at all. Of course I am crazy for the change at the two-minute mark - truly marvelous. Alas, I cannot sing, but the whole song is so super fun to sing along with anyway.
I’m so enamored of this track that I should learn more about Laura Marling, or even listen to any song besides this. Project for Monday, perhaps.
I lost my head, I lost it all
Thrush Hermit’s The Great Pacific Ocean is probably the greatest EP ever recorded. “Patriot” is on it. That alone would put it ahead of all but a handful of recordings. But there’s also the wondrous “Every Morning I Reread the Postcards,” “25 All Right,” “Claim to Lame,” and the title track (and its brilliant reprise).
The song “The Great Pacific Ocean” is devastating and inspiring. Cinematic. Spectacular. Yes, it includes the line “I lost our love at the shopping mall,” but that isn’t the takeaway. By the end, when we get to the final “you did not know-oh-ohohohhhhhh” it feels as if you’ve been living up to that moment just to hear that bit. Every time.
I can’t simply ignore it, darling
I love the Divine Comedy, so how is it that it didn’t even occur to me that Neil Hannon was behind the music in the IT Crowd? COME ON, JANE. He did Father Ted and everything. Perhaps I could have overlooked the theme- sure, it’s all computery and weird. Potentially tough to define a source. But the brilliant Emergency Services 0118 ad?! That could have been on a Divine Comedy album! It’s so clear, but I missed it. Thank goodness I have friends who are much more brilliant than I am.
This is Something for the Weekend, one of my favorite Divine Comedy songs. I hope you love it. (You will.)
it’s easy when it’s faster
There a few songs that I remember hearing for the first time - “Supersonic” by Oasis. “Do You Remember the First Time” by Pulp. “The Other Man” by Sloan. Where you were, what you were doing, etc.
“Black Metallic” by Catherine Wheel, the first time I heard it, I saw it, and to be completely unfair, the video was distracting. (You can watch it here if you need a distraction.) The imagery is a bit much, and the singer, well, he’s distracting in a whole other way. BUT even still, the song - in all its seductive, hypnotic glory - managed to completely possess me. In some ways, I’m still in a trance, 18 years (oh my god) later.

This might be my all-time favorite Chris Murphy hair, and I’ve been following Chris Murphy’s hair for 17-or-so years. So good.
Also, if you haven’t seen Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, what are you waiting for?
if you want blood, you got it
I realize this is a few years late, but I find it really disappointing that the takeaway line from a movie with a title as great as “There Will Be Blood” is “I drink your milkshake.” Really? Come on.
we are on time to say goodnight
I’m late to the game, and probably not the target audience, but this old Kill Hannah song, “Goodnight, Goodbye,” is my favorite right now. So good.
I was not familiar with the band’s music (just killer logo art) until I was introduced to them at work. Now I can’t get enough. I also highly recommend frontman Mat Devine’s blog for supreme entertainment.
That is all.
